The Salty Road was born in late June 2011 in Brooklyn. Friends of The Salty Road owner Marisa Wu had opened an organic produce stand near the beach in Far Rockaway, Queens, and had the idea to make some really good quality salt water taffy to sell on the boardwalk. Since Marisa had been working as a candy maker at Liddabit Sweets, she decided to make it for them to sell. Marisa had been warned about making taffy by hand– it was really laborious what with all the hand stretching, cutting and wrapping. But it was love at first pull. The taffy she was making was different than any other she had tasted before. The taffy was more flavorful and creamy like a milkshake with a distinct salt crystal crunch and a true vanilla flavor achieved by adding real vanilla bean.
Last year the team at The Salty Road realized that they would not be able to keep up with demand and teamed up with two different candy makers to help make their product. With the help of their Kickstarter supporters they were able to buy the equipment they needed and moved into their own Brooklyn candy factory.
